Zero Valent Iron (ZVI)
Connelly-GPM, Inc. takes pride in being the world’s largest manufacturer of Iron Aggregate (ZVI). We will custom grind to meet your specifications and needs. Our oil-free, size-specific Iron Aggregate is used for a variety of applications: Customers are using our ZVI for in-situ treatment of environmental sites with groundwater containing chlorinated organic compounds, removal of inorganic contaminants such as chromium, arsenic and selenium from drinking water, and various industrial and chemical applications.
Zero-valent iron (ZVI), also known as elemental iron (Fe⁰), is metallic iron in its zero oxidation state. It serves as a strong reducing agent (standard reduction potential E⁰ = −0.44 V) widely applied in environmental remediation for contaminated soil and groundwater.
ZVI acts primarily as an electron donor in redox reactions:
Reductive dechlorination — For chlorinated solvents (e.g., trichloroethylene/TCE, PCE), it transfers electrons to break C–Cl bonds, producing less harmful hydrocarbons (like ethene or ethane) without toxic daughter products like vinyl chloride in many cases.
Reduction of heavy metals — Converts toxic Cr(VI) to less mobile Cr(III), or immobilizes metals like As, Pb, Cd, Ni via reduction, adsorption, or co-precipitation with iron oxides.
